Ph.D. Candidate in Sociology
CAPS Study of the American Republic Fellow, 2022-23

Matthew’s dissertation investigates how and why the Republican Party and right-wing media have become so entangled in recent decades, tracing the development of media-party relations over a long time horizon stretching from the 1920s to the early 2000s. He asks whether policy decisions made between the 1920s and the 1950s that created an unusually decentralized broadcasting system set the stage for the alignment of the Republican Party and right-wing media at the dawn of the 21st century.
