My research examines the social/political construction of indigeneity along dimensions of race and nation. While my work takes a global approach to indigeneity’s multifaceted emergence, my specific case studies span archipelagos throughout Oceania. I investigate how everyday actors draw from cultural repertoires to actively construct a boundary that is distinctly indigenous. Lastly, I uncover how these everyday processes of group-making matter for social inequality.
