George Dalianis is a recipient of a 2022 CAPS Undergraduate Summer Thesis Research Grant. His proposed thesis is entitled, “The Energetic Executive: The Changing Nature of Presidential Signing Statements.”
Proposal synopsis:
This project examines presidential signing statements and seeks to answer the following question: how do signing statements reflect presidents’ evolving understanding of their constitutional authority, and how do such statements impact modern presidents’ constitutional disputes with Congress and the judiciary? I hope to answer this question by examining three presidencies through a legal, historical, and institutional perspective.
