Hannes studies 18th Enlightenment philosophy and the reception of exiled German thought in the United States during the 1930s and 1940s. He has published on Gotthold Ephraim Lessing and modern Bible criticism, on Hans-Georg Gadamer, Nicolai Hartmann as well as Leo Strauss. Currently, he is preparing an edition of Strauss’s notebook on Plato’s Euthyphro and an annotated English translation of Lessing’s Nathan the Wise. His 2021 book, Die Aufklärung der Aufklärung: Lessing und die Herausforderung des Christentums, won the first Chodowiecki Prize by Interdisziplinary Centre for European Enlightenment Studies.
