My research focuses on the interaction between political institutions and the mass public in American politics and in particular, why elected officials may have policy positions that diverge from the preferences of their constituents. I am interested in studying geographic variation in how partisan issues evolved historically and the implications of these differences for contemporary partisan polarization.
