Julia García Galindo is a recipient of a 2024 CAPS Undergraduate Summer Thesis Research Grant. Julia’s proposed thesis is entitled, “Narratives Against School Closures in Puerto Rico.”
Proposal synopsis: In just 15 years over fifty percent of all public schools in Puerto Rico were closed. This has had severe cultural and political consequences. For my thesis I will answer the questions: What narratives do people use when opposing school closures? Do narratives differ depending on if they are shared via social media or in-person? My methodology will be a mixture of interviews, social media analysis and archival research.
