Kate Birkbeck
Research Fellow, Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs

My research concerns the political economy of violence in the United States. My first project considers the arms trade, federal policy, and the extra-state groups that ended up with weapons between the Civil War and First World War. My second project is a history of private security companies in the long durée, from railroad policing in the nineteenth century to surveillance of climate migrants in the twenty-first. I am also preparing articles on the history of the National Rifle Association.
