My dissertation, the first extensive historical study of the U.S. pharmacy, explores the transformation of the drugstore from the early 20th to early 21st century: inclusive of its shift from independent shops to big box chains, corporate prioritization of profit over community health, and the pharmacy deserts that followed. I argue the rise and fall of the Public Health Pharmacy is historically intertwined with U.S. health policy and particularly impacts racial and reproductive health equity.
