Susanna Soelberg is a recipient of a 2025 CAPS Undergraduate Summer Thesis Research Grant. Susanna’s proposed thesis is entitled, “Community Resistance to Industrial Pollution.”
Proposal synopsis: I plan to answer the following research questions: What factors influence whether communities embrace or oppose Locally Unwanted Land Uses (LULUs)? More specifically, why do some communities in the Gulf Coast mobilize against industrial pollution while others accept it? In order to answer these questions, I plan to travel to two towns in Louisiana and/or Texas that are in close proximity to a highly polluting chemical plan to conduct interviews and consult municipal archives.
