Tobias Benn is a recipient of a 2023 CAPS Undergraduate Summer Thesis Research Grant. Tobias’s proposed thesis is entitled, “What Do You Care?: Investigating the Politics of Care in Activist Movements.”

Proposal synopsis: This project seeks to answer the question of why people advocate on behalf of a racial or religious group they do not belong to. In doing so, I will employ empirical and ethnographic research methods to interview 15-20 career organizers from Chicago, LA, DC, and Atlanta whose identities do not align with who they work to uplift. The resulting research will provide meaningful strategies on what it means to systematically cultivate empathy in support of social action movements.
