Monica Chang is a recipient of a 2022 CAPS Undergraduate Summer Thesis Research Grant. Her proposed thesis is entitled, “Comparing the Functional Right to Shelter in Boston and New York City.”
Proposal synopsis:
I will analyze how a legal right to shelter translates (or does not translate) into a functional right to shelter in Boston, MA and New York City, NY. Over the course of ten weeks (June 6 August 12), I will interview and observe individuals and families experiencing homelessness (pending IRB approval), interview direct service providers and advocates, gather quantitative data on the functioning of the shelter systems in each city, and conduct library research.
